To coincide with Vittoria Chierici’s solo exhibition The Philosophers' Clothes, Rossi & Rossi has published this catalogue which collects more works from the same project. Underpinned by the artist’s research on the Renaissance fresco The School of Athens, a series of visual experiments have been carried out on muslins and canvases, tracing out the history of Western art. The fact that the personages in the fresco were not modelled after the actual persons reminds Chierici of the essence of abstraction – and as she eases the emphasis of figuration canvas by canvas, she demonstrates how resemblance is not a condition for representation.

The catalogue offers an insight into the progress of the artist with excerpts from the diary of Vittoria Chierici as she worked on the project between 2016 and 2018.
