  • Rossi Martino, the joint business of Fabio Rossi and Giovanni Martino to promote European art in Asia, will present paintings and drawings by Giorgio Morandi and contemporary ceramic sculptures by Bertozzi & Casoni at West Bund Art & Design from November 8th to 11th in Shanghai.

The installation will be anchored by three exceptional paintings by Italy’s pre-eminent still-life painter, Giorgio Morandi, including Natura Morta, the first of fifteen paintings featuring shells produced by the artist in 1943.

Morandi is famous for transforming simple, everyday objects – like cups, bottles, and pitchers – into arrangements of reverence. Spending most of his life (1890–1964) in Bologna, the artist returned to his studio each day for decades, reconfiguring and repainting the same mundane scenes. His humble yet masterful practice argues for the importance of small, poetic gestures in lieu of large, flashy statements.

Morandi’s paintings and works on paper will be shown along side realist sculptures by Italian ceramic masters Giampaolo Bertozzi and Stefano Casoni. The duo began their practice in 1980 in Imola, Italy – a region well known for its ceramic craftsmanship – in an atmosphere dominated by a post-informal coldness and minimalist aesthetic following the tradition of Morandi and artists of the Art Povera movement.

Between compositional surrealism and formal hyperrealism, Bertozzi & Casoni study contemporary society’s rubbish, incorporating cultural icons in their assembled juxtapositions. For their work Cuccia Brillo (2003), a pop art-filtered Brillo box has been irreverently transformed into a makeshift doghouse made entirely of ceramic, a conceptual manifestation of time irremediably gone. Their sculptures – symbolic, mocking and pervaded by sense of attraction for all that is short-lived, perishable and decaying – have become internationally recognized metaphors of a human condition. The biting irony of their works is balanced by an unassailable perfection.
