Rossi & Rossi (Hong Kong, London) is pleased to announce its participation in the 2018 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong. The gallery’s booth will feature paintings, sculptures and drawings by three prominent artists from Asia: Rasheed Araeen (b. 1935, Pakistan), Siah Armajani (b. 1939, Iran) and David Medalla (b. 1942, Philippines).

Executed between 1979–80, Rasheed Araeen’s self-portraits Coloured, White Washed and A Long Afternoon employ a replicated photographic background that was used for the promotion of his historic performance Paki Bastard (1977). Combining the geometric relationships of his 1960s minimalist works with his activist roles of the 1970s, the triptych captures the resolve of a pioneering artist who challenged Eurocentricsm within the British art establishment and championed the role of minority artists, especially those of Asian, African and Caribbean descent.

One from a group of five large paintings completed by David Medalla between 1986 to 1991 after a stirring return trip to the Philippines, Young Man Gathering the Swift Bird’s Nest (1986), examines the gesture of taking a gifts from nature without dominating or abusing. The painting was first exhibited in The Other Story, curated by Rasheed Araeen for the Hayward Gallery, London (1989), and most recently at Centre Pompidou Metz (Jardin infini, 2017).

Mounted over the words of 20th century Persian poet, Shahriar, and incited by Iran’s political unrest of the 1950s, Siah Armajani’s Oil Belongs To Us (1957) foreshadows the complex relationship between language, culture and spatial arrangement that later becomes the hallmark of his fabled career.
