Giorgio Vigna

Giorgio Vigna was born in 1955 in Verona, Italy, where he established his first studio at the age of twenty. He later moved to Rome and then Venice, finally settling in 1990 in Milan, and remains based there today.

Together with famed Murano glass company Venini, Vigna created a work in 2017 titled Fuochi di Rugiada for the Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice, where it was placed to welcome visitors. The same year, he was invited to participate in INTUITION, an exhibition coinciding with the 57th edition of the Venice Biennale at Palazzo Fortuny.

In 2013, the Museum of Castelvecchio in Verona hosted Stati Naturali, an exhibition curated by Paola Marini, for which the artist conceived Acquaria, a permanent glass installation for the fountain of the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.

Vigna was invited in 2011 to participate in TRA. Edge of Becoming, an exhibition curated by Axel Vervoordt and Daniela Ferretti for the Palazzo Fortuny (concurrent with the 54th Venice Biennale), for which he created the sculptural work, Sospeso. Between 2003 and 2005, he realised the site-specific work La Radura in Garrison, New York, the first artwork of the Olnick Spanu Art Program.

He has held numerous solo exhibitions hosted by museums in Italy and abroad, including Altre Nature, also at Palazzo Fortuny (2010) and Giorgio Vigna: Jewels at the Designmuseo in Helsinki (2007), as well as a show at the Luigi Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art in Prato in 1992. The artist held another solo exhibition, Nature di Vetro (created in collaboration with Venini), in 2003, at the Correr Museum in Venice and the Museum of Villa Pignatelli in Naples.

Vigna began his career as a set designer and director in the 1980s, which allowed him to experiment with ancient marbling techniques on porcelain, ceramic and glass, along with their derivatives. Later, he studied engraving techniques at the National Chalcography Laboratory in Rome.

His ongoing collaboration with Venini began in 1997. He has since realised numerous works with the company, including a unique piece titled Fuochi d’acqua (2002), the first collection of Venini glass jewelery.

The artist’s work has been exhibited widely internationally and can be found in many public and private collections.
